Real-time ultrasound has become the method of choice for early pregnancy diagnosis by many veterinarians and some producers. The following is a brief understanding of the benefits of using a B-ultrasound machine for cow pregnancy testing.
Real-time ultrasound has become the method of choice for early pregnancy diagnosis by many veterinarians and some producers. With this method, a veterinary ultrasound probe is inserted into the cow’s rectum, and images of the reproductive structures, fetus and fetal membranes are obtained on an attached screen or monitor.
Ultrasound is relatively easy to determine pregnancy compared to rectal palpation. Most people can learn to use a cattle ultrasound machine for pregnancy testing in cows in just a few sessions of training.
For pregnant cows, we can easily detect them with a cow B-ultrasound machine, but it is challenging to learn to identify non-pregnant cows. Experienced operators can detect pregnancy as early as 25 days after mating with up to 85% accuracy and even higher accuracy (>96%) at 30 days of gestation.
In addition to pregnancy detection, ultrasonography provides other information for producers. This technique can determine fetal viability, the presence of multiple embryos, fetal age, date of calving, and occasional fetal defects. An experienced ultrasound technologist can determine the sex of the fetus when an ultrasound is performed between 55 and 80 days of gestation. Information about reproductive health or other health problems (uterine inflammation, ovarian cysts, etc.) can also be assessed in open cows.
Although the price of B-ultrasound machine for cattle is expensive, the use of B-ultrasound machine for cattle can make the cattle farm recover the cost within a few years, and it has an irreplaceable role for large-scale cattle farms. Some veterinarians will also purchase veterinary B-ultrasound machines to provide services to the farms. Most veterinarians and/or technicians will charge about 50-100 yuan per head for ultrasound examinations, and may charge off-site visit fees. Ultrasound fees will increase if fetal age and sex determination is required.
