How to tell if your goat is pregnant? This article covers blood tests, ultrasounds for goats, urine tests, and more to test for pregnancy in goats!
Blood Test
The fact that a blood test is less costly than an ultrasound is its main advantage. If it’s comfortable for you, you can draw your own blood and submit it to a lab for testing. It gets equivalent to ultrasound prices if you have your veterinarian collect blood, but it is often still less. Around 50 days following breeding, blood tests should be performed, waiting 40 to 50 days will give you the highest accuracy.
Blood tests will simply tell you if your goat is pregnant or not, yes or no.
Urine Test
Although some are touted as being for goats, there isn’t a urine test specifically for them. These examinations are simple to do at home and a great deal less expensive than ultrasounds or blood tests. The urine test examines hormones in the pee, much like a pregnancy test for humans, however it seems we can’t quite get the test right for goats. The results of urine tests “for goats” vary greatly, showing good findings for clearly unpregnant wethers and negative results for pregnant does. A pee test could be effective if you’re 99.9% certain that your goat is pregnant and you just want to be sure. Even then, it can merely make you question what you previously believed to be true.
Ultrasound Machine for Goats
There is a huge benefit to having an ultrasound performed by a veterinarian. You can see the baby goat on the monitor! This little thrill is almost worth the extra cost. Ultrasonography should be performed between 55-65 days, with earlier but most reliable in this time frame.
Of course, you can avoid the cost of a veterinary visit by purchasing an ultrasound machine yourself. This may actually be less than repeated veterinary visits if you do a large breeding. Eaceni veterinary ultrasound machines are also suitable for basically all livestock species.
